For centuries, the traditional throwing of hammers, putting the stone and tossing the caber have been core to the Highland games experience, with the more recent addition of throwing weight for distance and over the bar for height.

The Massed Pipe Bands at the Braemar Gathering are an iconic sight, and internationally renowned. Over the years, we have seen bands come from across the globe to take part in this great Scottish spectacle.

Piping is in the Society’s roots and continues to be strongly supported. The Solo Piping competitions start at 9.30am and run throughout the day. There are Senior (18+) and Junior (U18) categories, and local competitors are welcome.

The Services Events at Braemar involve top military athletes competing in both Tug of War and Medley Relay competitions for the prestige of winning and receiving a magnificent silver trophy from the Royal Family.

Highland Dancing is one of the oldest forms of dance. Accompanied by Highland Bagpipes, it is a style of competitive solo dancing developed over the centuries in the Scottish Highlands. Over 100 dancers from the UK and beyond attend the Gathering to compete for the prestigious ‘Silver Medal’.

Running and jumping competitions have been held in and around Braemar for hundreds of years. The ‘light’ events are a key part of the Braemar Gathering tradition. There are handicapped and scratch sprints and middle distance races, as well as long, high and triple jump events.

The Hill Race is a very popular and hotly-contested event. Competitors come from all over the UK, Europe and further afield, and the British armed forces are always well represented. We are proud to have welcomed many National Team runners over the years and will continue to do so.
